Say No To Software Patents
Thanks to: JESUS (CHRIST) *, Richard Stallman (AVI, RM, RM2-SP), and the respective creators of these packages and places.

Bag 'O' Tricks Directory lists tips/tricks and reminders and other stuff I would love to clog my header with.

* - Wikipedia is edited by anarchy, don't use for christian inspiration. Christian Bahai is a oxymoron BTW.
*! - I use Zonealarm Pro, which is what that flash demo is demonstrating, ZoneAlarm costs about fifty dollars a
year with updates, but is well worth it, it also comes with spyware weeding software, so there is no need for an application like "Ad-Aware",
"Spybot Search & Destroy" or "Spyware Doctor".
Companies/Organizations I Currently Consider Evil or Stupid:
OnRebate.com sucks!!

Why?: Claims to save time and accelerate processing

but Wastes Hours of Time Submitting Rebate

Offers no Recourse if Rebate Fails!!

ROFLMATD - TD = To Death

(11/30/07 10:54 AM): I'm thinking of coming up with a commercial of common sensical web development and applications design.. I can't tell what for it would take, but maybe I'd put it up as like 10 commercials on chann3lz (submitted videos, not chronologically repeating videos..

Okay here are some of the things I could say:

10 reasons not to create websites with anything but PHP and open source distributions that run on PHP:
    1. Ruby, Rails, Python and Plone are not Apache modules.
    2. Some languages like Java and Perl are great for code obfuscation, which strengthen vendor-lockin relationships.
    3. Java requires websites to be compiled, and in compiled form it is executed as a interpretive language like PHP.
    4. Most languages are impossible to debug: don't offer accurate descriptions and references to line numbers where the applications fail.
    5. Complexity does not make for better websites, especially when the sh*t hits the fan.
    6. Hybrid solutions are usually thought up by companies (that goes for you too, India) who are planning on some form of vendor-lockin.
    7. Closed source software (eg. Microsoft, Macromedia) has questionable security. And usually requires closed source counterparts (eg. IIS, Flash, Coldfusion, Java).
    8. Web apps based on C/C++ and other compiled languages are too complex to maintain for web development, and most web services will not offer this level of access to a web developer. Unless using CentOS on a VPS account.
    9. In general: Application speed and security is purportional to the number lines of code necessary to implement a solution.
    10. Strictly-Object-Oriented-languages require IDE's because execution is implicit in the language, not explitly stated. It's the price you pay for code reuse.
    11. I can't think of any more, so I'll be explicit, PHP is the number one WEB language, because it is free, open source, it is an apache module (which is also open source), it's easy to learn and debug, it can be used in any hybrid solution but usually isn't, it is very easy to read because a majority of the commands (resident or linked-in) are unique and are well documented (note the PHP website, itself, is one of the first websites to offer comments in its language documentation -- strengthening adoption of the language). Most PHP based websites use tens to hundreds of php lines to implement because PHP is not just a language it is an integrated minimal kernel, linkable applications development environment too. To abstract PHP, Pear is used, but in reality is a testbed for future language-level function calls. Also, in PHP OO is an option, not a requirement (that is more good than bad in practice).

It gets s little old, but what the hey..

I thought that some guy was going on a mad trashing spree, but searching the database, the trashing is pretty evenly distributed, so no its just popular.. And its thanksgiving, so I imagine there is some people full of turkey or tofurkey, sitting in front of the chann3lz and getting their nutrients from the tube.. Someone told me over tg-dinner that there is some portion of the population, vegans of sorts, that believe they can get their nutrients from staring at the sun for 8 to 10 minutes a day.. That and cataracts.. Anyhow.. I don't know what nutrients if any can be had by watching chz.

But more can be had from eating chz..

(11/13/07 10:16 PM): One game console future.. No, One OS for gaming? Yes.. Ubuntu, Ubuntu, Ubunt... Uh-buntu, oo-buntu, however you want to say it, the future of gaming.. Use any hardware you like, any OS or UI environment, get us drivers, make us games.. You can play games from old new, here or there, with hardware for this or that.. Its possible, just a matter of happening..

(11/12/07 2:40 PM): Had this great idea how to increase the quality of DVD's by using hamming code.. Here is the idea:

check wikipedia for a description of Hamming Code, its basically error correction, it uses (I think) xors of combinations of bits in the byte to determine which bits flipped, and then can be used to flip the bits back. It also can be used to determine if a byte is completely corrupted.

If you spread the bits across multiple DVD's, like one dvd be bit 1, and another bit 2 and so on.. You can increase the quality of storage by decreasing the likelihood of errors. Of course if you lose one disk, the whole thing is useless.. Actually it wouldn't be.. You could probably get back the missing bit if you knew which disk got lost, by setting the missing bit disk to zero, but you reduce the likelihood of error too.

Anyhow if the DVD's go down in quality at a consistent rate, you can either use DVD's of several different manufacturers or store the hamming codes somewhere else like on a hard drive or a more reliable media like tape.

(11/10/07 8:33 AM): What do farms and the music industry have in common? (Everything just one isn't goverment subsidized and doesn't produce anything necessary.. )

(11/10/07 7:30 AM): Just recognized the third talk show host on "in digital" video podcast.. Uhhh , Uhhh, that's what's his name.. Oh when he was young, was on STTNG.. It's that Will Crusher dude.. I may be wrong. but I'd recognize that forehead anywhere.. It's typical of a nerd show to do this.. I wouldn't be too surprised to see Jordi next.. Oh, well he would have no trouble getting a job on TV.. But then again TV sucks..

To tell you the truth, he will wheaton, his name, I was right.. He's got a bigger ego than I do.. It would be nice if he would just not try to be such a pompous jerk.. But I guess he could just leave.. You know what people really watch TV for, looks and celebrity. Information takes a back seat.. Just ask any News Anchor.

Saw some talk given by Larry Lessig on TED, and I have to say, he really fooled all those nerds and celebrities.. He really made DRM and media sharing look bad.. But wait, none of his argument holds water.. In the 1800's Sousa (the guy who did the "star spangled banner", or some song like that), he may have complained about the canister players (predated record players) as stealing peoples vocal chords. But we aren't returning to a media world like that where everyone is singing "danny boy" after dinner.. And could those canister players be so loud as you could hear them across the street.. In those days they didn't have streets, unless you lived in the cities, and the houses in the country were never really close enough to matter.. Sousa is a complete music snob.. Anyhow.. You have to consider what you would be doing in the 1800's.. Considering there is no computer, no internet, at best we could hack a podshow with some cups and string, maybe charcoal and electricity, or a early HAM radio (it's possible). But people were just dieing for technology back then.. If they had had drugs back then, I'm sure someone would have come up with a make shift DnD game. Maybe Sousa should have done some Absynthe or something.

And Harry Lessing (yes I know his real name), went on to talk about the current generation of kids assimilating media the only way they know how by manipulating it into make-shift anime movies.. No, Jerry, if you were a kid, and you had really nothing better to do, what would you be doing.. Then again this is the post-soccer-mom-apocalypse, so these kids making these anime movies of music videos and such, must be orphans.. Or it is really 30 something DnD/Comic nerds that just hate Anime and Lionel Ritchie songs and want to make fun of them at the same time.. But Kerry really pulled the wool over the eyes of all those tech-wannabe celebs.. However Thomas Dolby is pretty cool, just he had nothing to say in the TED conference.. I wonder if that french gal that sang in his spot was his long lost love which he wrote europa about.. Hey I dig french women, no matter how much they can look like a piano teacher and sound like paul robison, and what was with the casts.. I wonder if she'd respond to guys with cast fetish.. And believe me, they do exist..

(11/07/07 5:01 PM): The lady at "Textra" podcast has pissed me off one too many times, I finally erased my subscription to Textra.. She doesn't know crap about tech, and she sympathizes too much on the side of Bill Gates for me to really care about anything she says.. She said to "android" the new google idea, to create a open cellphone platform.. "Why are they wanting to compete in the operating system market".. No you ditz, you have no clue what an OS is, go get a CS degree and figure it out.. They are trying to create a middleware platform, not a completely new OS. See, from wikipedia: Android is an open source mobile phone platform based on the the Linux operating system and Java programming platform and developed by the Open Handset Alliance. So its basically linux and java with a special java environment for creating specialized apps for cellphones.. They could do it better to get rid of the java middleware and give people c-code level access to the linux hardware and offer some libraries.. But they are afraid someone will write a virus that will spread across phones.. And thereby slowing the crap out of the phone..

      (11/06/07 12:58 AM):
      (FULLSCREEN)

Wow this guy really stakes the cake..

(11/05/07 09:01 AM): My Toshiba Laptop I've complained about has some unexplainable delays that periodically happen when using it with the retro drivers.. This is a laptop I downgraded from Vista to Windows XP.. Its missing some drivers, and I think those drivers must be maintaining something in the hardware that causes a delay in the CPU if not satisfied or something.. Anyhow, I'm considering replacing my XP partition with either another distro of linux, or just freeing up the space, because Ubuntu 7.10 on the same laptop is going great guns, without any delays or inefficiencies.. I don't miss Windows much anymore now.. I can do all my media stuff in Ubuntu that I want to.. Aside from video editing, but I think I could make get a video editor to work in Wine, there is bound to be one. Even if I can't get that to fly, I can try using the clip editor in blender which I'm quite familiar with.

To install windows applications with wine, all you need to do is go into the ubuntu shell, called "terminal" in the applications utilities menu.. Make sure you have wine installed.. You type in the terminal window "wine install.exe", that's it.. If the install creates a directory with a setup file in it, just go in that directory and type "wine setup.exe". Either the application will work, or it won't work.. I haven't really figured out how to add icons to the "wine" menu. But if you can find the program that starts the program, you can drag that file unto your quickstart toolbars, even give it a custom icon, and click it to run in wine.. I don't really understand how Wine makes it work, but it just does work. Install Wine and then Wine-Doors, if you don't have wine, I think Wine-doors installs some applications that make installing other windows applications easier..

      (FULLSCREEN)

      Nice modern country western group..
      (FULLSCREEN)

I really wish the Smiths would release their songs for sale on Amazon.. I've bought about 8 dollars or so worth of music, and went looking for songs like the boy with the thorn in his side" and couldn't find anything.. But I could find Morrissey's stuff.. The closest I will come to buying online is buying mp3 songs, I've tried buying DRM'd songs and it sucks, there is no flexibility.. Go ahead and put signatures into the header of the mp3 file, I don't care, I just want to download mp3 songs.. I guess the record companies can consider the extremes.. Either people get CD's and rip the songs to mp3, which is so easy, and What I prefer to do because CD's have a higher sound quality than mp3.. Or people get songs from iTunes, and burn their music to CD, and rip that to mp3.. Why not just offer the mp3 files directly.. Because what they really want to do with the DRM-labeled files is to trace the use of the files, that's all I can imagine..

(11/04/07 02:58 PM): Watching Chann3lz in a spurt.. Seems like sometimes it picks a winner after winner, but the sad bit is nobody else will experience the spurt of selected videos, except for me, or you, or whoever notices this in chann3lz.. I need to capture that somehow, maybe I can make the play queue into a playlist when someone gets a good selection.. I still have to implement playlists.. Anyhow.. here is a few...

      (FULLSCREEN)

Phil Collins looks so good in this video, this is before his solo career had taken off.. And before Genesis got to be (very) mainstream in America..

      (FULLSCREEN)

This chinese girl is hot.. Are their sexy Chinese girls like this in China, I'm there..

Lead singer died from drug overdose, I think his heart stopped.. But Blind Melon is one of my favorites.. Chann3lz picked the first, the second I found with a CD in a pile of amiga software at a local thrift shop.. I guess they didn't realize it was a music CD.. I thought, what luck!! I've always wanted this "three is a magic number" song..

      (FULLSCREEN)

Blind Melon with "Tones of Home", I love this video..
      (FULLSCREEN)

Same group, Three is the magic number..
      (FULLSCREEN)

Galaxie, believe it or not I have the Huh video collection too, that's where this came from, it was a 90s video magazine, it was a strange time in the music business at the time because so many indie bands were hitting the scene, so many I think it will take years to figure out how many there were..
      (FULLSCREEN)

Of course this is what everyone knows Blind Melon for.. I think wierd al made fun of this video in his take-off of Red Hot Chilli Peppers' "Givitawaynow", which was called "Yabbadabbadunow"..
      (FULLSCREEN)

      Weird Al's Bedrock Athem..
      (FULLSCREEN)

The Red Hot Chilli Pepper Song that Weird Al is parodying..

Incidently, chann3lz picked this for me while I was constructing the Blind Melon stuff..

      (FULLSCREEN)

Oasis doing a Quiet Riot song.. I thought these guys sung bland minor chord ridden music..
      (FULLSCREEN)

Okay the original, Quiet Riot.. No?
      (FULLSCREEN)

Or was it?? It was Slade evidently.. Wowowowoww..

Note I've always hated Oasis' music, until now.. Well maybe..

      (11/03/07 11:01 AM):
      (FULLSCREEN)

Wow its been ages since I've seen this..

(11/03/07 10:00 AM): I trashed the Extended Max Headrom video.. I can't listen to remixes from the late 80s and early 90s as they tended to be mostly sample repetition, which is about as interesting as watching television fuzz.. The only musician I like sample repetition from that time is guys like EBN which would take commercials and presidential speeches and communicate messages using videos out of context like "smoke more pot" or such.. Not that I agree with the views, but that it makes more blatant what television is, context manipulation..
